The Anchor Club

About Us

The Anchor Club was first formed in 1916 on the basis of friendship by a group of masons that worked for the railroad. One of the founding members, Joe Smith, owned huge expanses of land and he donated a magnificent section of shorefront that included a natural sandy beach, for the club to build a lodge.

In 1920 the original section of the main building was constructed by members of the club, each one of them donating their time, labor and building talent. What began as a lodge for day trips and picnics was eventually modified to include 11 rooms where families could stay over and vacation .The names of many of the original founding members and builders of The Anchorage are remembered today in plaques over the doors of each room. The club continues to celebrate it’s founding basis of friendship and continues to exist as a cooperative effort with members helping through donation of their time, skills and funding.

History and Folklore

What would a Masonic Railroad club be without a bit of train history and folklore? Fortunately the Lakes Region around Winona is the place to find both.
